PM urges provincial authorities to study appropriate crops |
Lao prime Minister has urged provincial authorities to investigate the potential crops that can earn farmers high incomes while preserving the environment. His comment comes in responsetofears of rice shortages in the near future after many provinces throughout country have suffered from flood and drought in recent times.Laos has an abundance of fertile soil but cultivation does not always provide high yields due to a lack of consideration as to which crops are best suited to which areas he said.Mr. Bouasone was speaking during a visit to Savannaket,Chaqmpassak and Xekong provinces on ensuring food security.

Govt, development partners coordinate future projects. |
|
Government agencies met with development partners in Vientiane yesterday to discuss the implementation of future project and the important contributions made by development partners. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the meeting Minister of Agriculture and forestry Mr. sitaheng Rasphon said the government of Laos is fully engaged in the final phase of preparing the 7th National Socio-Economic Development plan. This process is important because is will determine both the strategic orientation for each sector and the prioritization of future investmetments he said.

World Bank, EU give boost to rural food security |

A four year food security project with funding from the world Bank and European Union totaling US$14.6 millon aims to provide farming communities in nine Lao provinces with more reliable food stocks. The four year project titled Lao PDR Upland Food Security Improvement will be implemented in luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, xieng Khuang, Huaphan, Savannakhet,Champassak,Saravan, Xekong and Attapeu provinces. Provincialofficials and exprrts from related ministriesand organizations gathered in Vientiane for a workshop from July 8 to 9 to discuss tasks and a work plan
